Launching: Wonkpot. Our New Sustainability Effort.

We love ceramics! Their handcrafted unique qualities and individuality hold a certain charm that cannot be found in a mass-produced item shipped in from China. They do however have a tendency to rebel during the making process. The nature of crafting ceramics means that the shape can deform, glaze can change and cracks can appear and so these wonderful (but extra quirky) pots often end up in the bin, despite being perfectly functional and having lots of character. That’s not what we are about at Florence + Blank, and so we are excited to announce the launch of a new sub-brand called Wonkpot.

Wonky but Wonderful

Wonkpot has been something that Emilie and Sam have thought about for years, even before the emergence of Florence + Blank. The idea came about in the early days of learning how to create beautiful pottery, when more often than not, the pots weren’t “up to scratch”. But you’ve got to break a few eggs to make an omelette, right? During this time, family members would happily take those pots which had imperfections, making use of them as flower pots in the garden or on window sills where faults in the ceramics, like a missed section of glaze, couldn’t really be seen.

At Florence + Blank, we are constantly striving to be more sustainable in our practices, so it seemed fitting to send less waste to the pot graveyard and more to loving homes.

“Our skills have developed, but naturally the more we've learnt, the more we've perfected, and become perfectionists.”

  • SAM RAYBONE, FLORENCE + BLANK

Wonkpot is an initiative that hopes to marry together the desire to sell perfect pottery with a more sustainable approach. In line with the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi where the imperfections of an item are revered and cherished rather than shunned, Florence + Blank will be making “Wonk pots” available for purchase on the website. As well as ceramics with minor imperfections, you will also be able to find experimental pots for sale, created on a one-off whim and not forming part of a continued range.

Wonkpot Sustainable Homeware

We value the work of our artists and independent makers, which is why you won’t find us running seasonal sales like Black Friday or January sales. It goes against our batch-produced, built to last ethos. However, Wonkpot products will be available at a lower price due to their “imperfections”, which will be clearly highlighted in the product description for each piece. It’s a win-win situation for the maker, the buyer and the environment! Follow us on Instagram to be the first to know about our new Wonkpot launches and let us know what you think of our perfectly imperfect pots.
