As December rapidly approaches, the hunt for the perfect gift begins and this year more than ever we could do with a bit of Christmas cheer. We think that the perfect gift should support small businesses, be kind to the environment and last a lifetime. There are lots of ways to have yourself a sustainable Christmas, from using eco-friendly wrapping paper, to decorating a houseplant as a Christmas tree and going meat-free. Buying locally handmade gifts and sustainable home goods that will be treasured for years to come is another great way to ensure that less ends up in landfill, all while supporting artisans.
The Florence and Blank Christmas Gift GuideWe have compiled some of our favourite homeware products which make wonderful presents for friends and family. Read on for our top recommendations for the best eco-friendly Christmas gifts our online store has to offer.
The coffee lover
Everyone knows a coffee enthusiast and we have just the thing for them; our beautiful little espresso set that comes with a cup, spoon and coaster, lovingly handmade in London. The cup and spoon are by Lilly, the designer maker behind The Super Sparrow ceramics, while the complimentary coaster has been crafted by Lucia Di Landro of Pigment & Razzo using Jesmonite (an environmentally conscious alternative to resin-based products and a lightweight concrete substitute).
The Jesmonite coasters, also available to purchase separately, have been cleverly coloured using recycled coffee grounds and finished with beeswax to give them a lovely smooth surface.
Houseplants have seen a resurgence in recent years and this 1970’s trend is once again bringing joy to green fingers and gardening novices alike. If you know someone who is monstera mad or croton crazy, take a look at the beautifully illustrated A-Z of Houseplants book by Flora Grosvenor-Stevenson, a comprehensive care guide on how to keep your green babies thriving. You can rest easy knowing that this book uses recycled heavyweight and acid free paper with vegetable-based inks.
We also adore this handmade dimple pot which makes for a beautiful little home for a small houseplant.
The Hostess with the Mostess
The festive season is often a time when we take the most pride in our homes. With the Christmas tree up and the chance to host guests for mulled wine and merriment, a special homeware gift will be gratefully received. If the recipient of your Christmas present loves to host, this show stopping speckled stoneware carafe doubles up as a table centrepiece. With its sculpted looks and textured surface, it’s like no carafe you’ve seen before. Of course, no sit-down event is complete without cheese and this ceramic cheeseboard would make a beautiful and unique gift.
For those with an eye for art, this recycled cotton rag paper wildflower art print by Kira Penrhyn-Jones would make a thoughtful gift. Kira grew up on a small farm in North Wales and took her inspiration for this print from the wildflowers she watched grow over lockdown. For something ornamental, our sculptural speckled vase by Ciona Lee of Tonfisk is a beautiful conversation piece. The Korean-Italian artist and designer behind this grogged stoneware vase is based in London and specialises in crafting unique and intentionally imperfect handmade ceramics.
Lover of little treasures
They say that the best things come in small packages and we couldn’t agree more. This stoneware clay soap dish not only encourages the use of less plastic in the bathroom but also makes for a versatile item, doubling up as a jewellery tray or even an olive dish (it’s dishwasher safe)!
Of course you can’t go wrong with a scented candle and our soy wax candle uses 100% pure essential oils and no artificial additives for a wonderfully calming, room-filling scent. Hand poured in London, this lavender and rose geranium candle reduces stress and promotes relaxation.
Have Yourself a Sustainable Little Christmas
The gifting season is a wonderful time to spread the love and is a great excuse to shop small and support independent makers.
