Packaging: Keeping it Green

Packaging may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, or exciting part of running an online store, but we feel it is still plays a very important role in the ordering process here at Florence and Blank.

Since launching we have been trying our best to send out your orders in sustainable packaging. We have found that this becomes slightly tougher when the item is more fragile. Our ceramics for example need a few layers of cushioning to avoid any breakages; and generally bubble wrap would be perfect, but we hate plastic!

When we were setting up Florence + Blank we were ordering lots of different supplies like business cards, cushion pads, authenticity cards for our prints, stock including our soy wax candles, ceramics from our makers and many other bits and pieces. We decided to keep hold of the packaging from these deliveries to reuse, and we also got other family members involved in keeping packaging from their own online deliveries too. Whilst this gives us some sustainable packaging, in the form of reusing rather than buying new, it wasn't enough for our own deliveries.

After lots of searching around and reading through other peoples recommendations we came across Priory Direct. They have a lot of packaging, and not all of it is eco-friendly, however their website is easy to navigate and you can quickly find their sustainable packaging options. We also like that you can shop by eco-friendly credentials. For example if you want a product which is biodegradable and compostable, something that is carbon neutral or just recyclable, you can select from a list and filter the products available. They even have mailing bags made from grass!

We took our time working out what we wanted and needed and ensuring that we wouldn't order anything that would go to waste. One of the products that we have found invaluable are the biodegradable packing peanuts. These are made from GM free starch and are completely plastic free and compostable. As well as being lightweight they are also great for fragile items so we can post our ceramics with peace of mind!

Another sustainable packaging product we discovered via Sticker It were compostable branded stickers. We made the classic mistake of not measuring the size of the stickers before ordering, and by our own fault they turned up much smaller than anticipated, however they are still cute.. and most importantly biodegradable! They are made from 95% sugar cane fibres and 5% hemp and linen. As tasty as the sugar cane content sounds we wouldn't suggest eating them unless you are absolutely starving when unpacking your Florence + Blank order.

If you have any other questions about our sustainable packaging, or in turn any advice for us on other places to find great packaging and posting options then please get in touch with us, we would love to hear from you!
